Patricia Conroy, M.D., a soon to be general surgery research resident, has been awarded a CTSI TL1 Postdoctoral Fellowship. Dr. Conroy has been mentored and supported in her work by Kim Kirkwood, MD and Charles Craik, PhD. The UCSF School of Medicine has been named the second best medical school in the nation for surgery in U.S. News & World Report's annual survey of the best graduate and professional schools, moving up from fifth place last year. This is the third consecutive year in which U.S. News has included surgery as a specialty ranking for medical school, and each year, UCSF has been included in the top five schools. We are pleased to announce that Ronald B. Tesoriero, MD, FACS has joined the Department of Surgery faculty as Associate Professor based at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG). Dr. Tesoriero will serve as an attending physician on the Acute Care Surgery Service as well as on the Trauma and General Surgery Services, and in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at ZSFG. He will also be appointed as the General Surgery Residency Site Director at ZSFG. Zachary Matthay, M.D., a general surgery research resident, received the prestigious Ernest E. Moore Basic Science Research Prize from the Western Trauma Association for his investigations and manuscript on "Dynamic Effects of In-Vivo and In-Vitro Calcium on Platelet Behavior". The award was given during the 50th Annual Western Trauma Association Meeting, held February 23-28, 2020 in Sun Valley, Idaho. The Department of Surgery has launched a new Faculty Affairs and Development Portal. The portal provides an array of tools and resources for our diverse faculty to achieve success in academic surgery over the arc of their careers through mentorship and leadership development.   The portal also provides resources for faculty to develop and update their Department of Surgery biography and UCSF research profile, and to build a presence on social media. The UCSF Department of Surgery is accepting abstracts for presentations at the upcoming 33rd annual Resident Research Symposium, to be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at the UCSF Mission Bay, William and Susan Oberndorf Auditorium. All surgical residents, fellows, and medical students are invited to submit an abstract for consideration no later than February 26, 2020. Daniela Rebollo Salazar and Natalie Rodriguez were selected as recipients of the 2019 Haile T. Debas Diversity Fellowship. Daniela, a 4th year medical student from New York University School of Medicine, took an elective course in Advanced General Surgery - Colorectal at UCSF in September. The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce that Wen T. Shen, M.D., M.A. has been named Director of the UCSF Surgery Grand Rounds Education Series. Dr. Shen is an endocrine surgeon and a Professor of Clinical Surgery. Zachary Matthay, M.D., a general surgery research resident, received second place in the American College of Surgeons Region IX Committee on Trauma Resident Research Competition, held at Cedars Sinai Medical Center on December 7th, 2019. His presentation, titled "Dynamic Effects of Calcium on Platelet Behavior after Injury," identified important relationships between calcium concentrations, platelet function and transfusion requirements in trauma patients. The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce that Jessica Gosnell, M.D. has been named Associate Surgery Clerkship Director. Dr. Gosnell is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of General Surgery. Her clinical practice is in endocrine surgery, focused on diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands, and acute care surgery. In her research, Dr. Gosnell studies new treatments for thyroid cancer through translational work and clinical trials, with a particular focus on multiple endocrine neoplasia and medullary thyroid cancer. The Kidney Project, a national effort to develop an implantable bioartificial kidney that could eliminate the need for dialysis, announced a key milestone in a November 7 presentation at the American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week 2019 conference in Washington, DC. Matthew Y.C. Lin, M.D. has been named the UCSF Surgery Clerkship Director, starting January 2, 2020. Dr. Lin is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of General Surgery. In his clinical practice, he cares for patients with conditions of obesity, gallbladder, intestines, stomach, and complex hernias.
